VET
Vocational Education and Training (VET)
Warracknabeal Secondary College is one of a cluster of 13 schools in the Wimmera Mallee area that offer students in Year 10, 11 and 12 VET (Vocational Educational Training) subjects throughout the year.
Every Wednesday during school terms is known as 'VET Day' and students are bussed to Horsham from outlining schools to participate in selected accredited certificate training. There are 5 RTO's - Registered Training Organisations in and around Horsham. Federation University, Horsham College, Centre of Participation, Skillinvest and Longerenong College are all organisations that offer our VET students either Certificate II or Certificate III level training courses. Some VET courses offer a scored assessment in second year, which has the student sitting an exam at the end of the year and their score goes towards their ATAR score for VCE.
VET courses are comprised of Units of Competency designed and accredited nationally. Each unit attracts a time frame determined by the amount of work required and therefore the 31 weeks of VET is comprehensive. Students are expected to catch up on any missed work from being absent and a certificate will be issued once the course is completed. Most courses run over 2 years, with pre-determined units of competency for each year completed.
VET students do not pay for tuition, which on average totals $2500 - $3500 per student/per course. Students will however, be expected to pay for any material costs, such as hairdressing equipment, uniform, excursions, paper resources or specific tools of the trade.
Transport to Horsham every Wednesday is by public bus (at a student cost of approx. $9 return), which departs from the Warracknabeal Post Office at 8am. Students also need to supply their own lunch or buy it from the Cafe at the university or somewhere up the street at their own expense.
